Nestled in the heart of Madison, Minnesota, watercolor artist Deborah Meyer has transformed her lifelong passion for art into a vibrant second act. After a fulfilling career in nursing, Deb embraced retirement as an opportunity to delve deeper into her artistic pursuits, focusing on capturing the human spirit through her paintings

A Journey from Healing to Creating
Deb's artistic journey began early, but it wasn't until later in life that she fully immersed herself in the world of watercolor. Initially an art major at St. Cloud State University, she shifted paths to nursing, dedicating years to caring for others. Upon retirement, Deb reignited her artistic flame, taking online classes and honing her skills in watercolor portraiture, with a particular emphasis on depicting people and their emotions.
"Sri Lanka in Watercolors": A Tribute to Resilience
One of Deb's most poignant collections, "Sri Lanka in Watercolors," draws inspiration from a mission trip she undertook in 2005 to aid coastal villages devastated by a tsunami. The series captures the resilience and grace of the Sri Lankan people she encountered, translating their stories into vivid, emotive portraits. This work was supported by an Emerging Artist Grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council, enabling Deb to frame and exhibit ten pieces from the collection.
Celebrating Everyday Moments
Beyond her international subjects, Deb finds beauty in the everyday scenes of rural Minnesota. Her painting "Front Porch," inspired by a snowy day at her own home, was featured on the 2023 Southwest Initiative Foundation holiday card, exemplifying her ability to find inspiration in her immediate surroundings.
Engaging with Community Beyond Madison
An active participant in the local art scene, Deb opens her home studio during the annual Meander Art Crawl, inviting visitors to experience her creative process firsthand. Her involvement in community events and dedication to sharing her art have solidified her status as a cherished local artist.
Personal Life and Recognition
Together with her husband, Maynard, Deb has been a pillar of the Madison community for over four decades. While Maynard has contributed through media and civic engagement, Deb's artistic endeavors and volunteer work have earned her accolades, including the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Madison Chamber of Commerce.
